Overnight Success

Overnight success
doesn’t happen overnight.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this idea. I have no idea why it popped into my head one day, or even how to appropriately attribute the quote. (If you know where it came from originally, drop me a comment and I’ll make sure to update the post.)

I like the idea that “overnight success” only happens after years of hard work behind the scenes, when no one is watching or making you put in the work. “Overnight success” is an illusion.

It is true for me in my job and in horses. Not that I’m saying I’m an overnight success. I’m not the best rider or the best at marketing. But I work really hard and I enjoy the process of learning.

And that has led me to this point in my life. I am so happy with where I am in my riding, and the path I’m on with eventing. I wanted to try eventing for so long, and now I’ve done it! And even had some success at it. One year ago, I didn’t really think I’d become so comfortable at Novice. I can absolutely imagine moving up to Training at some point (not right now, I have a lot more to learn and Novice is a great level to do that).

I’m also really happy in my job. I recently started a new position, at a company I had worked for in the past. Being back is really strange sometimes, because a lot is the same, but a lot is different. I am different. I think I was a shy little mouse when I worked here before. Now, I am much more comfortable using my voice. Even better? People listen when I do. And that’s not because I’m the most amazing at marketing, but my coworkers do know that I work hard and continually educate myself, and so they give weight to what I say. So that’s a pretty neat feeling and kind of a new one for me.

This whole post has been a bit muse-y and introspective. But I really do like the quote. It makes me reflect on the work I’ve done to get where I am, and also it helps me remember that whatever happens in the future, hard work and determination will lead to more success – whatever that looks like.

What does success look like for you right now?

  1. Funny, my dad always says “the secret to overnight success is time.” He’s a smart guy, so you must be onto something 😉
I’m in a similar spot and dang don’t it feel good?
